From Our Home Library

These are books I've pulled from our shelves to be read-aloud. I put an asterisk (*) besides the ones I'm not sure about reading yet. I have a few books that I have ordered/will order because they are Ambleside selections for Year 1, hopefully they will be here next week. I'll list them after the ones we already have.

We are currently reading Milly-Molly-Mandy.

Next from our shelves:

  1. James Herriot's Treasury for Children
  2. Stories and Fables (Childcraft How and Why Library)
  3. The Wind and the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
  4. Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers*
  5. The Adventures of Chatterer the Squirrel by Thornton W. Burgess
  6. Giant Treasury of Beatrix Potter
  7. Favorite Greek Myths by Mary Pope Osborne
  8. Roman Myths by Geraldine McCaughrean
  9. A Child's Book of Myths and Enchanting Tales (compliation from older books) illustrated by Margaret Evans Price
  10. Charlotte's Web by E.B. White (switch to independent read)
  11. Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter* (switch to independent read)
  12. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl (switch to independent read)
  13. Homer Price by Robert McCloskey* (switch to independent read)
Books that have been ordered:
  1. Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling
  2. Our Island Saints by Amy Steedman
  3. The Book of Fables and Folk Stories by Horace E. Scudder
  4. Reading-Literature The Primer by Free and Treadwell (independent read aloud)

Books that will be ordered:
  1. Burgess Animal Book for Children
  2. Burgess Bird Book for Children
  3. Pinocchio
  4. Understood Betsy
  5. Christian Liberty Nature Readers (Books 1-3) (read aloud to me)

Our history read-alouds are for reading during the week as well but I find it's better to read them right after we do our history lesson. If a history read-aloud is longer, it generally is read during our nightly reading time. If you have any input about these books for a 6.5 year old, I'm open to suggestions or warnings.

I am always amazed at how planned you are!! I seem to have a problem with looking into the future and planning for it adequately. I tend to plan for the future but always change it before I even get there....I am much more led by emotions. Your books look great. We just started Charlottes Web tonight. Your NYR's look really good to. I am hoping to post mine tomorrow sometime.

I am stumped as to how you found my blog over here at Blogger.....did I leave you a comment?

Have a great day worshiping the Lord!! Kelli

As I read your blog I am reminded of how excited I used to be about homeschooling. I so need to find that excitement again. I love seeing all your plans. The book list looks wonderful and there are one or two I've never heard of, so I'm off to look them up. Have a wonderful New Years Eve.
Love, Becky :)

Hey there!
I'm fairly new to your blog, but I've really enjoyed it!

Just thought I'd mention to be careful with Pinocchio, if you haven't read it before. You may want to read ahead.

It introduces such topics as hanging, stabbing, getting thrown in prison, ghosts, etc. Granted, these intros were fairly brief and gave some teaching opportunities, but my then 6 yr old son could have waited a bit for them!

The biggest lesson received from the book was the importance of choosing wise friends over foolish. This brought in wonderful use of scripture and really was an extraordinary topic! Timely too!

You've definately got good reading ahead! I'll be checking in. Thanks for sharing your plans.

Thanks Melissa for the heads-up, I've also been warned to preread Mary Poppins. I'll hold off on these until I can read them myself, The Iliad has my attention right now.

Hi, Jessica,

Just a suggestion, I know that you were looking into some books for next year for SOTW II and the reformation period. Have you looked into the Louise A. Vernon books? I have The Man Who Laid the Egg, which is about Erasmus. I have The Beggars' Bible, which is about John Wycliffe. I would put them on a third or fourth grade reader, but don't quote me on that one.
I love your blog. Keep up the great work. It is so hard to maintain one. My dad is maintained on his chemo treatments. He takes it in pill form. He and my mom are going away for a couple of weeks which is a relief for me.

Just wanted to let you know that ROCK SOLID is having a web special on the Christian Liberty Nature Readers. I dont know how good a deal it is, because I have never looked into them. But if you go to their website and click on Wed Specials it will show you. Looks like they have them for $22.00.
