A Weekly Report

We are starting back slow but it was good to have started! Camille is currently reading Roald Dahl's The Twits and she'll read Gulliver's Travels next. I'm reading books from Year 2 Unit 3 aloud without anything else for history, just enjoying what we're reading.

We are doing math again, all week we've been working on our math facts both formally and informally. In English, we've focused on letter writing and envelope addressing. We've completed 4 lessons from PLL. Next week, Camille will probably start her piano lessons again, I'm pretty sure I've found her a new teacher.

Slowly but surely, we're getting back into rhythm. I have not been successful in meeting new friends, I have found two homeschool groups but have not spoken to anyone from them.

Today we're going to Oatland Island Wildlife Center, and possibly to the Marine Science Museum at Tybee depending on how our visit at Oatland Island goes. The kids are excited...

I am waiting to see your pictures from the science centers. I am planning to take the girls to Tybee...soon! Thanks again for your help with our trip planning! I am not having much success with dd7 and math facts. We have started multiplication and the facts just do not seem to stick. Any suggestions?

Michele,
Multiplication ideas:

1. Work on one fact family at a time, like zeros, review them daily for a week. Then move on to the next. We use math fact copywork where Camille copies a fact family everyday for a week and then I quiz her on them.

It's slow going but effective.

2. Math literature
Another helpful tip is to get a few books from the library (if they have these titles) about multiplication like
- Times Tables the Fun Way: Book for Kids: A Picture Method of Learning the Multiplication Facts by Judy Liautaud, Dave Rodriguez, and Val Chadwick Bagley

- Marvelous Multiplication: Games and Activities that Make Math Easy and Fun by Lynette Long

- The Amazing Pop-up Multiplication Book by Kate Petty and Jennie Maizels

- Corkscrew Counts: A Story About Multiplication by Donna Jo Napoli, Richard Tchen, and Anna Currey

- Math Phonics (TM) : Multiplication (Math Phonics) by Marilyn B. Hein, Judy Mitchell, and Ron Wheeler

- All Aboard Math Reader Station Stop 3 Breakfast at Danny's Diner: A Book About Multiplication: A Book About Multiplication (All Aboard Math Reader) by Judith Stamper and Chris L. Demarest

- Multiplication on the Farm (Math All Around) by Jennifer Roy and Gregory Roy

- Multiplication (Question of Math) by Sheila Cato and Sami Sweeten

- Anno's Mysterious Multiplying Jar

-Amanda Bean's Amazing Dream

I would look at your library catalog, search for "multiply" and multiplication to see what books they have available.

:) Hope this helps!

It is hard to get back into the rhythm of things, but it sounds like you and the kids are doing a great job. You are not only getting in the necessities, but fieldtrips too. How fun!
